Ecology and theater, together protagonists of the Ecological Theater Festival, scheduled in Stromboli from 12 to 15 July 2015 for its second edition. But Alessandro Fabrizi, one of the creators, tells us that this idea of theater without lights and without electric light, with an imprint of ecology important, it originated many years ago. As a child in the gardens, he imagined theater scenes between boulders and trees, and then the idea of this was born Party in the name of ecology.
“When in 2015 I organized the first Linklater Method seminar for Voice and Text a Stromboli I asked the talented light designer, Roberto De Rubis, to cure the lighting, he could not come because he was seriously ill and I gave up everything - he says - but there I realized how much wealth there was in the energies that were released on stage: I could have dedicated myself to those, without "framing" with lights ". With ecology.
1) When was the actual Festival born?
By a working group led by Tommaso New Year, Leonardo Gambardella and me. Since we were very excited to work with this idea of ecology on stage, we thought of inviting other artists to express themselves and propose experiences in this one ecological mode. We launched this "aesthetic provocation" in the "zero" edition of 2013: an electrifying experience of spectacular ecology.
2) Is it the only one of its kind in the world? How do you manage without electricity?
It seems to me that it is the only event in the world in this precise ecological mode. I have not found anything like the Stromboli Festival regarding the'ecology and at the theater: our meetings with the public (theater, music, dance or other) take place really and strictly without electricity and no electrical amplification. It is funny that today it seems so strange to us to do theater like this because the use of electric light in the theater it is very recent and it is not a question of ecology. The first time at the Teatro La Scala was in 1883.
3) What "green" benefits are there in "giving up electricity"? Where is "ecology"?
In times when the question of energy saving it's so urgent, and it's a question of ecology, we ask a question: why not try to make a show by giving up something that is not essentially necessary, such as electric current? I also find that amplification, the excessive and unconditional use of microphones, is the cause of a sad noise pollution, which is making us deaf and above all passive listeners. L'ecology, therefore, it is good for our mind as well as our health.
4) And artistically what does all this ecology entail in the theater?
There electric light in the theater it offered enormous potential for creativity. Today, when we are so constantly subjected to special effects, and it's all a "sight & sound", the uniqueness of a performance can rediscover its enveloping charm thanks to the'ecology. In stripping off the trappings that seem indispensable to us, we offer a special relationship between artist and public. Removed the electric current, there is enormous room for creativity, greater attention toecology.
5) Tell us an example of what we can expect from your theater and ecology proposal
Giorgio Rossi will dance on the beach accompanied by a local group, at sunset; Franco Marcoaldi he will read an unpublished poem among the trees at about 300 meters on the slopes of the volcano; we'll see Prospero and Calibano (Shakespeare's Tempest) confront in a real cave, facing the sea and we will hear Nada sing without a microphone, in the wind… The theme of Ecology party at the theater is "The stranger" and with the title "Strangers in the Night" we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of a well-known foreigner, Frank Sinatra, with "Ode to Karen" by the Swedish performance artist Marie Ohrn we will also celebrate the 100th birthday of Ingrid Bergman. On the refugees, there will be an event together with Doctors Without Borders and related to their campaign #millionsofsteps.
6) How does the festival fit into the environmental and landscape context of Stromboli?
There is an invitation from ecology, to respect it and make it protagonist, to relate to that landscape and dialogue, inviting him to become a "scene" of the performance. Last year Laura Mazzi read the poems that Emily Dickinson wrote about volcanoes and on the sun right at the foot of the volcano and a few hundred meters from the crater that actively participated in the performance with its eruptions, on a platform overlooking the sea, in front of the sun that began its descent. And at the end of the last one poetry, the sun touched, in front of all of us, the horizon between sky and sea, starting the sunset. Who was the director of this event? Ecology, nature… That's the game.
7) How can you attend, participate or support your ecology and entertainment initiative?
The shows are all a free entry, you just need to organize your trip and book accommodation. Artists and organizers offer the Feast ofecology at the theater for free, and this year we are supported by Ricola and La Molisana. The accounts are still to be balanced, small (or large!) Donations can be made through our site. The Party really needs it!
